there was a chip on the shower seat in the master bathroom; the master shower door was squeaking; some of the kitchen cabinet handles were scratched; and the wood columns outside of the house were chipped… and a few other items.  Once we do a 2nd final walk-through this Friday morning, we will be ready to approve the house and then the final documents will be sent to the county to be recorded.  If all goes smoothly, we should have the keys by 4:00 pm this Friday! The last 7-1/2 months went by very quickly, and it’s been an amazing journey witnessing our house being built each step of the way from the ground up.  I love every part of this journey, but my favorite has to be choosing all the selections (including upgrades) for the house at the design center.  It’s so gratifying to see all of our choices all installed at our house. I love the elevation that we selected… it truly has the farmhouse feel!  If I had a choice, I would paint the entire house in white but the HOA has its guidelines and out of all 3 elevations, I still like the colors of ours the best. Here is the front entrance, my study and the powder room (on the left)! My study on the ground floor… The powder room… The wood look tile floor on the ground level is looking very nice and it keeps us cool in the summertime time! We are doing something exciting to those windows in the great room… stay tuned! Eagerly awaiting our Samsung refrigerator delivery this Saturday to fill that empty space in our kitchen! So in love with our backsplash and quartz kitchen countertop!  I think we have enough outlets on the wall!  🙂  There is also under cabinet lighting! Our upgraded kitchen… can’t wait to start cooking and baking here! The cooktop looks so clean right now! The hood installation is finally completed.  It looks great and is exactly how we want it. This undermount stainless steel farmhouse apron sink is slowly growing on me now! We have carpets on the stairs! And we have the drain pan for the washer and gas hookup for the dryer in the laundry room upstairs… Really loving our cushy carpet upstairs… now I can lie and sit on the floor again (hence no shoes allowed in the house).  YAY! Our upstairs loft is looking great… it will be our 2nd living room with the TV and media table over by that wall. The guest bathroom is looking very nice! The guest bed frame and nightstands will be going in this Sunday, but we still need to buy the mattress and bed linens though. The closet in the guest bedroom… One of the other bedrooms will be Darren’s office! The closet in Darren’s office… Master bedroom – the 7-drawer dresser will be put against that wall, in addition to a floor length mirror which I am still looking for. That’s the side of the wall where the bed and the nightstands will be… Ahhh… my barn door to the walk-in closets and master bathroom! Straight on view of my lovely barn door! This is my sink and vanity cabinet… And that’s Darren’s!  It’s so nice that we don’t have to share a sink and drawers ever again.  We totally missed the “his” and her” vanity cabinets + sinks from our Maui house. That’s our master shower on the right… Ahhh… can’t wait to take bubble baths (and read) in this tub! A closeup of our master bathtub.  No, we did not upgrade to the jacuzzi tub… as Darren says: “Just one more thing that would break!  Let’s keep it simple!”  Hahaha… View of our upstairs loft from the bedrooms… There are A LOT of windows at our house! View of kitchen, great room and dining area from the stairs!  Don’t you just love those wood like tile floor?  They are so perfect for us and the cats! That extended kitchen island is so awesome!  Now I have space to bake and prep food.  We will be getting 2 counter stools so we can also eat at the island. This is it, guys!  The next time we blog, we’ll have the keys to the house and hopefully, have some photos of the new fridge to make the kitchen 100% complete.

We Have Backsplash and Appliances! https://www.lifeinsonomawinecountry.com/we-have-backsplash-appliances/ https://www.lifeinsonomawinecountry.com/we-have-backsplash-appliances/#respond Mon, 09 Jul 2018 16:00:40 +0000 https://www.lifeinsonomawinecountry.com/?p=10790 This past week, the contractors installed the backsplash in the kitchen.  I have been going back and forth with this backsplash… somedays I am happy with it and then other days I started doubting the color and wished we had picked the white subway tiles instead.  For some reason, I thought the “greige” color would be slightly darker, but once we see it in the kitchen, I am in love with it again and it’s the perfect hue! I love that the grout between the tiles is also very thin, which makes it easier for clean up! Part of the vent hood is installed as well as the gas cooktop.  We had to upgrade to a “Gourmet” kitchen with the builder because I wanted a separate vent hood as opposed to the microwave hood combination that comes with the house.  And with that same package, our appliances are also upgraded.  I am actually not a huge fan of the GE appliances (which come with the house), but since the builder doesn’t give us any credit back if we don’t take the appliances, so we got the next level up which is the GE Cafe Series and they are pretty nice.  The appliance package includes the cooktop, double oven/microwave and the dishwasher. Since we have to purchase our own refrigerator, we just ordered my dream Samsung counter depth fridge since Costco is currently running a special promotion. We selected these brushed nickel farmhouse style kitchen and bathroom fixtures… Totally loving this rain shower head in both the master bathroom and the guest bathroom: Ahhhh… and our “greige” wood look tile floors in the master bath and the rest of the ground floor of the house! The next time we see the house on Monday, July 16th, it will be the first final walk-through with the builder’s Home Care Specialist.  We have about 3 hours to inspect the house to make sure everything looks and works fine.  Anything that is not up to par, we will let them know and they will try to fix the issue before our 2nd and last walk-through on Friday, July 20th.  Then we will be picking up the keys that same afternoon!

Countertops + Hardware Fixtures Installed https://www.lifeinsonomawinecountry.com/countertops-hardware-fixtures-installed/ https://www.lifeinsonomawinecountry.com/countertops-hardware-fixtures-installed/#respond Sun, 24 Jun 2018 16:00:33 +0000 https://www.lifeinsonomawinecountry.com/?p=10759 A little more progress on the house this past week – all the countertops and hardware fixtures are installed.  We chose quartz countertop for the kitchen because after all the research that both Darren and I have done, we agreed that quartz is great to maintain and is very durable.  Of all the houses, lofts and live/work spaces that we have lived in, they all had dark speckled granite countertop and it was super difficult to see any types of spills and drips.  So when it came time to select for our new kitchen and bathroom countertops, I chose the “Lagoon” style (white with gray marbled pattern). Now it’ll be much easier to clean up. PG&E also turned on the power at our house, so all the lights are working now.  We will switch the account over to us once we have the house keys in just a few more weeks!  We love that all of these lights are on dimmer switches.  Apparently, Darren’s aunt told us that the recessed lighting bulbs will last a lot longer if we don’t turn them on all the way, so these lights on dimmers will work perfectly. All of the hardware fixtures are also installed this past week.  We chose these door handles as opposed to door knobs because if for any reason our hands are full, we can still use our elbows to open the doors!  That’s what we did with our Maui house, we switched out all the door knobs and replaced them with these handles… so much more efficient! For bathroom countertops and shower walls, we selected the “Glacier White” Piedrafina marble.  It’s eco-friendly and durable without breaking the bank!  Now waiting for them to install tiles inside the shower floor. Master bathtub still needs to be put in… Master bathroom vanities – mine on the left of this photo and Darren’s on the right (with the medicine cabinet)! Ahhh… one of my favorite features of the house – the BARN DOOR for our master bathroom!  We are going to install more barn doors to the house, but you have to stay tuned to see where they will be!  🙂 Brushed nickel tower racks are in… So is the hand towel ring… And the toilet paper holder… A view of our L-shaped backyard from the master bedroom.  That will be our next project once we move in and once we decorate the interior first… one thing at a time!  Just like our Maui house, we didn’t want a huge yard because we have no kids and/or dogs, and I just want a very low maintenance yard since Darren and I are both “brown thumbs!”  We have an idea of how we want the backyard to look, but will have to chat with a landscape architect down the road. Light Fixtures and Tile Floors Are In https://www.lifeinsonomawinecountry.com/light-fixtures-and-tile-floors-are-in/ https://www.lifeinsonomawinecountry.com/light-fixtures-and-tile-floors-are-in/#respond Sun, 17 Jun 2018 16:00:47 +0000 https://www.lifeinsonomawinecountry.com/?p=10727 This week at the house, the light fixtures and tile floors are in!  I can’t believe that all the selections that we made at the Home Gallery last November are finally being put in at the new house.  Everything is really coming together and we are almost there.  I feel a little sad that the home construction process is almost coming to an end.  It has been such an amazing learning experience and we would totally do it again in a heartbeat! They finally put in the landscaping at our front yard.  The garage door and the main front door still need to be painted, although I much prefer they stay white! And the light fixtures are in as well.  Here is our brushed nickel dining room orb chandelier!  Isn’t it pretty? Ahhh… and I just LOVE the pendant lights over our extended island in the kitchen!  They look absolutely amazing! And our wood-like tile floor is installed in the entire house too!  I love how each tile has slightly different variations.  The reason why we chose tile floor is that they are much cooler and easier to maintain when we have 3 furbabies.  Their nails won’t scratch the surface, and it’s easy to clean up if they have hairballs!  🙂 The floor is all covered up until they finish the rest of the house.  The pendant lights look so beautiful!  I think we have enough lighting in the kitchen!  🙂 Can’t wait to have our dining room set under that gorgeous chandelier and the counter stools at the kitchen island. The only thing I am not crazy about is the bathroom light fixtures. They didn’t have a lot of selections to choose from at the Home Gallery, so, for now, these will have to do. The thermostats are in, and so are all the light switches and dimmers.  We have been spoiled by the last loft and the current live/work space that we live in.  Both places have dimmers and we LOVE them!  We also heard that the light bulbs last longer if you have dimmers on them.  Those will be perfect for the canned/recessed lighting because those bulbs are difficult to change. How do you like these mushroom lights in the other 2 bedrooms?  I call these the “boob” lights ‘cuz they truly look like boobies!  🙂  I prefer to have these ceiling mushroom lights installed as opposed to having floor lamps which take up space in the room. Air vents are all in as well throughout the house!  Darren said this would be the cleanest these vents are ever going to be… same as the HVAC system outside the house in the backyard!  The fan blades are immaculate! Love all the windows on the ground floor in our great room and dining area! They are putting in countertops on Tuesday, June 19 and Wednesday, June 20.  And we may see the bathroom/kitchen fixtures as well… saw the sinks in the boxes today.  Stay tuned for next week’s update!

It’s nice to know that they also put insulation on the walls throughout the house, in addition to the attic and ceiling.  The temperatures in Sonoma Wine Country are quite extreme.  The highs in the summer can reach 100’s and the lows in the winter can dip down to the 30’s.  Hopefully, this house will be very energy efficient with all the materials they are putting in and we don’t need to use the central air too much! All the plumbing inside the house is also installed as well!  Here is our extended kitchen island where the farmhouse sink is going to be.  It’s interesting to see the red and blue tubes where the hot and cold water is coming out of.  We never knew that… learning something new again! The air vents are all in place as well… We have wall sidings in the living room… And the dining room… This is the upstairs loft… Plumbing is in the laundry room as well! Guest bathtub and plumbing are installed! Here is our extended master shower/bath and plumbing!  So interesting that it’s all black underneath! The hot and cold water tubes are like a maze hanging up in the ceiling: All the hot and cold water tubes up in the ceiling remind me of the freeway systems in California!  🙂  It’s fascinating! Frame Walk Completed https://www.lifeinsonomawinecountry.com/frame-walk-completed/ https://www.lifeinsonomawinecountry.com/frame-walk-completed/#respond Sat, 14 Apr 2018 16:00:03 +0000 https://www.lifeinsonomawinecountry.com/?p=10511 We did a frame walk with the construction manager 2 weeks ago right before we left for our family trip.  The interior ducts and vents are in, and the plumbing will be going in next.  When we return from our trip next week, the drywall should be up already. This is the water pressure gauge in the garage: Electrical panels are also installed in the garage: Air vents and ducts are installed! That’s the vent for the kitchen hood! Just found out we have some crawl space underneath the stairs.  It’s perfect for storage! Air vents and ducts on the 2nd floor: We can see the insulation inside the vents: Air vent for the dryer in the laundry room: Roofing materials installed… Our first visitors – my good friend Letitia and her son Quincy from SoCal! Porch Awning + Fire Sprinkler System Are Installed https://www.lifeinsonomawinecountry.com/porch-awning-fire-sprinkler-system/ https://www.lifeinsonomawinecountry.com/porch-awning-fire-sprinkler-system/#respond Sun, 11 Mar 2018 16:00:52 +0000 https://www.lifeinsonomawinecountry.com/?p=10483 The porch awning and the CPVC fire sprinkler system inside the house are installed.  It’s been 20 days since we last checked on the house.  We can see the awning here in this photo… Our neighbors’ houses next to us on both sides are progressing nicely as well.  It’s fun to see all the houses being built in the same time frame. Here is a closer look at the porch awning from the loft on the 2nd floor (photo on right)!  Once they put up that wall, we won’t be able to see it anymore. These are the fire sprinklers!  They are installed throughout the house in the ceiling both on the main floor and the 2nd floor… I was checking out the space in my future office/study on the main floor!  Need to get my desk, bookshelves, filing cabinets made but won’t know the dimensions until we have drywall so I can take the measurements. The CPVC fire sprinkler system is low maintenance and has a 50-year life expectancy over the traditional metallic system. The materials inside these black plastic bags are for the HVAC and the rough system which will be going up next.  Yippppeeee… so exciting!
